The founder of the company is Salvatore Capezio and he started the business in Totowa, New Jersey in 1887. Capezio is the brand name for clothing made by Ballet Maker, Inc. In 1950, Ben Sommers ran the company because he was a dear friend to Salvatore. During turbulent financial struggles, the company sold to the U.S. Shoe Corporation that continued to keep the brand name in honor of its founder.

The shankless Demi Soft is based on the Glissé design, and intended for pre-pointe students.
