Doc Martens

Doc Martens shoes (also known as “Dr. Martens” or “Docs”) were first developed by a doctor in the German army during World War II named Dr. Klaus Martens. Authentic black leather Doc Martens are noticeable with their characteristic yellow stitching, although the term today refers in general to any black leather shoe or boot created in a similar style to the originals. Doc Martens first came onto the scene in early1960 and were the footwear of choice for the working class.

More than just functional footwear, Doc Martens shoes and boots have become a staple among decades of style-conscious subcultures and eventually emerged as a fashion phenomenon. Once synonymous with angry British youth, Doc Martens, like their sturdy leather uppers, have mellowed with age.

Bavarian physician Claus Marten designed the clunky, cushiony, thick-soled boot out of old tires in 1945 after a skiing accident necessitated more comfortable footgear. He created a boot that had an air cushioned sole that provided comfort as well as absorbing some of the impact from walking and running. The boot also provided support for the ankle, which reduced the amount of body weight applied to the ankle.

Doc Martens shoes have remained popular for a number of decades and have become a relevant and vital piece of footwear for a number of different cultures and movements. These different sub cultures saw Doc Martens as a way to identify who they were and to recognized  those that were similar to them.

Today however, the stigma is gone and Doc Martens are a popular choice for both men and women in a variety of social classes.

Lastly, when you are buying shoes, make sure you get your feet properly measured and go at a time that is sometime in the middle of a normal day. That is because your feet tend to expand a bit when you walk and go about your daily work. They are usually their largest at the end of a typical day.
